Brick No126: My "Get Out Of Jail Fr*e" Card
By Matt Weston, Tuesday 18 January 2005

5am Tuesday. And I'm bleary eyed.

I had hoped to deliver a follow-up to Friday's Brick (Matt Weston VS The Subservient Chicken), but events have overtaken me.

The covers are due to come off the new Business Bricks website on Friday, and I still need to fix umpteen broken links, write thirty-odd three-line blurbs, and put up the last half-a-ton of bricks (the archive only goes up to Brick No80 at the time of writing). A bit of this, and a bit of that, and then a bit more this.

I need to play my "Get Out Of Jail Fr*e" card. But it is an old favourite of yours . . .

Last November, I ran two batches of reader websites for you to critique: new sites, revamped sites, and broken sites that get good traffic but few sales, all crying out for constructive feedback from good Samaritan readers.

If you're familiar with the format, then there's no real need for any more of a warm-up act. The third batch is below, and you know what to do.

If not, take a look at Brick No109, which introduces Jenny, Ken, Gary, Paul, and Julian, AND tells you how to give good Feedback . . . the second batch, that's Allena, Ben, Steve, Jason, and Matt, is here (Brick No114).

Brief instructions: if you're giving feedback, make sure you send your email to the email address in the blurbs below, not to me. Lastly, if you've got a site, and you'd like the once-over from other readers, just drop as many details as possible to this address.

Ladies and gents, a warm round of applause if you may . . .

(1) Tim Etherington

Tim (in the top hat) trains racehorses at Wold House Stables in Malton, North Yorks. Apart from a website that "needs tweaking", he's also developing a newsletter. Give him your take.

(2) Twinkle Star Designs

Sarah Napier runs Twinkle Star Designs, an Interior Design business that specialises in children's rooms. Her website has been set-up since June, and she'd appreciate any feedback you can give.

(3) Sense-Ability

Martin McLean and Anna Lickley run Sense-Ability. They provide disability and deaf-awareness training in Wales, SW England and the West Midlands. By Martin's own admission, his is a "relatively simple site", it needs to be as accessible as possible. That said, they're not really making inroads in terms of search engine rankings.

(4) TrackSnack

Jay Nicklin wrote to thank me for his Google AdWords vouchers (see Brick No116) . . . "We are using Google as part of our campaign to launch a new site for Jazz enthusiasts - don't know if you are one, but please do take a look anyway." Well, as it happens I am partial to a dash of Chet, Ella, Mingus . . . all feedback to Jay.

(5) Black UK Online

Black UK Online launched 18 months ago at the Notting Hill Carnival. Shirley McGreal is about to have the site rebuilt, as she's been told the current incarnation is too busy and difficult to navigate. Email any thoughts to Shirley.
