Coworking Brighton perhapses

Matt Weston, 18 Aug

This is a v. of an email I’ve been emailing to poll interest:

I’m seriously toying with the idea of starting a physical coworking space in Brighton, perhaps a lot like the coworking space in SF etc http://coworking.pbwiki.com or, if no, http://www.the-hub.net i.e. a “cafe-like community/ collaboration space for developers, writers and independents.” - oh, and freelancers, small business owners and etc etc. I don’t know yet if the model is Really viable here or even exactly what form said model should take. But the very next step seems to be to flush out a group of perhapses - reply by email please. mailto:matt.weston@businessbricks.co.uk

Well there’s certainly an existing market for it: http://www.brightondeskspace.co.uk/ and I know from personal experience that nice shared space is very hard to find beyond the usual suspects of The Media Centre and some grotty places on the Steine.

Addenda: (i) in addition to Jay’s comment above, I drew replies on the BNM and Coworking threads, plus c. ten off-list replies from other perhapses (ii) see, too, the coworking wiki (iii) immediate next step is for some of us to meet-up at next Tuesday 5 Sept’s Brighton Cluster and begin to figure out, collectively, what we want.

I guess the starting point would be to look at what BMC do and do the exact, total and utter opposite.

I’m a little late in replying here, but I personally think this is a great idea for the UK market. So much so that of late, I’ve been looking into setting up a similar venture here in the north west - specifically in the Liverpool and Manchester areas. As a freelance creative myself, working from home can be an isolating experience, so on a personal level I believe there’s a captive market for a well designed environment that encourages collaboration and networking between like-minded people. As well as providing decent desk and lounge space at affordable dayly, weekly or monthly prices. A kind of incubator for ideas and individuals. But my own project has slowed up as the premises I had earmarked went to someone else. And as we all know, the right space in the right location is vital. Or is it? I imagine there are similar things already out there in the south, but in the north it seems anything vaguely similar is still a little too ‘corporate’ and ‘office space’ like. I’d be interested to see how your own findings and plans are developing.
