Alex Smith says:
I think (1) and (2) are about different situations. (1) refers to public presentations, (2) to conversations. As a presenter, I’ve tried my best to cut the “ums”, etc. In conversation, I try to use body langage or hand signals to let the other(s) know that I’m not finished and just taking a rest to gather more thoughts.

I would love to see the body language for “um”, “ah” and “er”!
