Fixing Steve’s logo

Matt Weston, 12 Apr

Steve Dobson writes in: “We (Unusual Hotels of the World) need a new logo. We’re working on a site redesign, but the problem is that the least unusual thing about the site is our logo. We’ve lived with it for a few years but it’s too corporate. And we’re a bit stuck for ideas.”

The old logo is top left on Steve’s site

Can you help Steve? You don’t need to be a graphic designer, or even able to draw. Steve’s stuck for ideas so if you have an idea, just write a sentence or two to explain it. The only remit is that he’s after an idea that reflects the “unusual” part of the brand, not just the “hotels”. If you can draw (or can’t draw, but like to draw) you can post a sketch to me and I’ll scan your sketch, and add it. Or, if you have easy access to a scanner, you can scan it and email me.

I have always used gotlogos.com for this sort of thing. They produce logos to spec for $25. I’ve used them half a dozen times over the years, and have yet to be disappointed.

Why not just turn the existing logo upside down? It’s cheap keeps your identity and there’s something unusual about the world turned upside down.

It makes me think of worlds - so how about something like the intro sequence to the TV show - 3rd rock from the sun

Alan Crockford says:
How about a cartoon tortoise with a shell shaped hotel on its back? Location of lettering would be important - maybe that key word “UNUSUAL” in bold at top left, with a neon effect “HOTELS” sign looking snazzily absurd atop the toroise-shell-hotel and an airy “OF THE WORLD” trailing in the tortoise’s wake. PS: Neelesh’s logo is nice, and some of the samples on Matthew’s recommended gotlogos.com site look very classy. I nearly squandered $25 on a new badge that my football team doesn’t need.

How about a picture of a very regular-looking hotel which is casting a shadow of something completely different — like a boat perhaps?

How about the globe with 3D images of unusual hotels coming out at angles from various countries / continents - a castle, a floating hotel etc etc

Sorry to all the people above who’ve suggested it, (even Neil immediately above, despite the fact that his graphics look very sweet) but my advice would be: Whatever you do, don’t use a globe. I would say it is the most overused device for logos and corporate graphics in the history of graphic design. The ‘world’ in your name says enough about the globalness. You don’t need to reiterate that in the graphics. I’d use something a bit unexpected that gives a flavour of your character. You have a very strong personality as a company - don’t be afraid to express it in the logo, even if it means being a bit wacky. Because: people like to deal with people, not companies.

Thank you to everyone who has added a comment here or contacted me via the site. The hard part we’re trying to get across is the world UNUSUAL, as the hotels and world aren’t the only thing we do. We run events, incentives and reward programs too. UN-Usual… About 40% of the site traffic we see doesn’t have English as a first language so we need to try and be as visual as possible …

Nathan Manders says:
This has got to be the most stupid brief ever and would be a complete waste of time for a seven-year-old with a crayon - let alone anyone with serious graphic ability. To put at the start: “Steve Dobson writes in: “We (Unusual Hotels of the World) need a new logo.” and then to say “hotels and world aren’t the only thing we do” is a contradiction of the dumbest kind. Perhaps sort out what the company does before deciding on a name! Perhaps call yourselves “Unusual Waste of Time for Losers” but have nothing to do with Time, Losers or Waste.

If 40% of site traffic doesn’t have English as a first language then I’d suggest rather than trying to make the logo represent all the services you offer, that you make it easier for visitors by offering at least some explanation of your offering in their language (assuming you are going to expand the site to include details of your other services). Few of your competitors seem to do this (www.thanksdarling.com www.mrandmrssmith.com were just two I looked at) but www.lastminute.com do. For someone with only a little English they could probably get by the booking process and maybe specific hotel details but it will be too much hassle for them to try and understand all the text on your site if you are planning to expand it. The other advantage is that if you have international languages on your site you can list in some of the country specific search engines who only list sites that include their ‘local’ language. You also have to bear in mind that to represent all your services visually, it could end up one complicated logo, and it won’t necessarily ‘translate’ culturally. This is an interesting article we found on our travels…Lost in Chinese Just stuff for you to think about :0)

neelesh says:
Yes I’d have to agree with Rachel C. The globe is used to excess & the company does have an interesting slant on what they provide & exploiting that would be best. I also unfortunately agree with Nathan, thought I would have put it rather more diplomatically. Nail down your briefing.
