If only you had no money

Matt Weston, 1 Feb

My friend Charlie * lent me this line: “Think what you would do if only you had the money - then figure out how you can do it anyway.” Try also: “Having no money sharpens the wits. [It] forces you never to make the wrong decision.” **

* Charlie is number one of many editors at Pick Me Up. In his spare time he’s working on a project to start a school.

** from The Manual: How To Have A Number One The Easy Way by Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty.

I think it is a very interesting approach. Similar in structure to Ian Ayres and Barry Nalebuff’s approach in their book, “Why Not?” One of their problem solving tools is to ask “What would Croesus do?” Croesus, a consumer with unlimited resources. What would he do? What would the Trumpsters, Bransons and the Gates do? The next question is to ask ourselves, is there any way for us regular Joe’s and Jane’s to emulate it? Additionally I think Charlie’s approach can be used compliment their tool by pushing it a little further: what would you do if you have unlimited resources and then figure how to emulate it if you have none.
