Less alarm clock

Matt Weston, 22 Dec

timex easy set alarm clockDiverting debate on alarm clock design over at Mark Hurst’s thisisbroken.com.

Apparently there are several things wrong with the Timex Easy Set alarm clock — in particular the manual (see left. click the image to enlarge). A couple of notes [1] I don’t think an alarm clock should even need a manual especially (a) if it’s called Easy Set, and (b) if you want to sell in bulk to hotel chains. [2] Easy ? less buttons. Easy = less functions.

Have a look at “The Design of Everyday Things” which is essentially a whole book about the fact that nothing which is well-designed should need a manual. I just bought my wife a digital camera and she bought me a DAB radio. She has no interest in technology so I had to read the manuals. They took me most of Boxing Day!

BTW, The book was originally “The Psychology of Everyday Things,” making it the “POETs” book, but it kept getting filed under Psychology in bookshops so the title was changed. Pity!

All the best for 2006, Matt, and everyone else who reads Business Bricks.
